Computer Memory ------------------------------- There is often a misconception about computer memory. A lot of people mistake computer memory, also known as RAM (Random Access Memory), for available storage space, however data is saved to and stored on a Hard Disk.
RAM is what is known as volatile memory, this means that data can only be present in the memory whilst there is a continuous power supply, as soon as this power supply is cut, the data is lost. It is a temporary storage media that is accessible to the computer processor much faster than the Hard Disk, the reasons being that it is physically closer to the processor, and the processor does not have to wait making redundant clock cycles whilst required data is searched for on the relatively large Hard Disk. When data is stored in the RAM it is known as being cached.
An example of this is when you open an application, Microsoft Word for instance, for the first time since switching on your machine, some of the information will be cached, this means that next time you open the application, it will open much faster. Try it out and see for yourself!
How do I know if I need to upgrade my memory? Some tell tale signs that you could do with a computer memory upgrade could include: + Slow sluggish performance when starting up/shutting down your computer + Lack of responsiveness when navigating through your system + When opening a new window, sections appear separately and slowly + Poor performance from applications and/or games If you experience any of the above symptoms, then chances are a computer memory upgrade will alleviate these, and you should notice a significant boost in your computers performance.
